ZAGREB, Aug 21 (Hina) - The Yad Vashem Memorial Centre of
Jerusalem has awarded "Righteous Among the Nations" medals to
three members of the Sopianec family from Croatia for risking
their lives to save Jews during World War Two.
The "Righteous Among the Nations" title was awarded to the
late Franjo Sopianec, who owned the Olex oil refinery at Sveta
Klara, his wife Lela, who now lives in Buenos Aires, and their
son Ivica, now living in Milan.
The Sopianec family lived in Zagreb until 1946. During the
Ustasha regime they risked their lives for hiding seven Jews in
the Olex refinery and offices in Sveta Klara and Zagreb.
Besides the Sopianec family, about fifty Croats have
already been recognised as "Righteous Among the Nations".
