During his visit to Ilok, Richardson opened the newly-reconstructed
building of the Slovak cultural and education society 'Janko Cmelik' and
visited the church of St John Kapistran. In Miklusevci, the U.S.
delegation met with the representatives of the Ruthanian minority and
visited the local Serb Orthodox church.
Opening the newly-reconstructed building of the Slovak cultural
society, Ambassador Richardson said that one of the main objectives of
the U.S. government in creating the Erdut agreement was to preserve the
multi-national and multi-cultural identity of the Croatian Danube river
region.
Richardson said he hoped that the reconstruction of the Slovak
cultural society would symbolise the reconstruction of the whole area.
If Croatian citizens in the area show that they are able to live in
peace, it will not only contribute to the well-being of all, but it
would set an example for other signatories to the Dayton agreement,
Richardson said.
