ZAGREB, June 6 (Hina) - The Embassy of the United States of America in
Zagreb on Friday issued a statement in which it "takes strong exception"
to a commentary published in the daily Vjesnik which, according to the
U.S. Embassy, "suggests that the Embassy provided the Department of
State with misinformation about the events in Kostajnica".
"These allegations are untrue, unfounded and a misrepresentation of
the Embassy's scrupulous efforts to report accurately on violation of
human and civil rights in Croatia.
"At no time did the Embassy report any of the figures cited in
(Vjesnik's) commentary. The Embassy's reports on events in Kostajnica
were based on first-hand information provided by Embassy officers who
visited the affected villages in the Kostajnica region after the
incidents and prior to Secretary Albright's meeting with Foreign
Minister Granic", the statement by the U.S. Embassy in Zagreb concluded.
