ZAGREB, March 5 (Hina) - A Croatian Vice Premier Ivica Kostovic, on
Wednesday said in Zagreb that he was expecting that next Monday or
Tuesday, UN Transitional Administrator of the Croatian Danubian
area, Jacques Klein, would officially forward to Croatian
authorities written confirmation of the call for elections in the
Danubian area.
Kostovic who met the Belgian government special envoy for
UNTAES Thierry de Gruben on Wednesday, said after the talks that a
Belgian delegation was mostly interested in preparations for
elections and in developments in the Croatian Danubian area after
UNTAES left the area on July 15 this summer.
Preparations for elections reached the stage when last
political and administrative aspects were being put in accordance
with each other, Kostovic told the Belgian delegation.
He said he was sure that by the end of the UNTAES mandate
regulations about passing the border between Croatia and Yugoslavia
would be elaborated.
In this regard, July 15 would be no dramatic event, and we
were expecting that after that a professional like Gen. Klein would
lead a mission of international supervision, Kostovic said.
Belgian officials were interested in organization of the
return of Croatian displaced persons to the Danubian area and in
ways how to solve the problem of Serbs who have moved into the area
and are now living in houses of the displaced people. The list of
persons who were not included in the amnesty law also interested
them.
I told them that we adhered to legal principles and that it
(the list) was the matter of our juridical system, the Croatian
Vice Premier said.
As regards problems of Croatian displaced persons' return and
persons who are living in their houses, Kostovic said that
Development and Reconstruction Ministry was preparing "a programme
which will answer those questions." He added that as early as
spring some of displaced persons would be able to come back in the
area but that conditions for mass return would be created only
after July 15.
An assistant to Croatian Foreign Minister, Neven Madey, on
Wednesday also received the Belgian delegation led by the Belgian
government special envoy for UNTAES, Thierry de Gruben, Foreign
Ministry said.
At the meeting Belgian officials paid tribute to the Republic
of Croatia and its policy in peaceful reintegration of the Croatian
Danubian area.
Madey and the guests discussed goals of next monitor mission
after July 15, this year.
Ahead of their trip to Vukovar the Belgian delegation
expressed willingness to invest in the area.
