Friday. The ceremony was attended by numerous sportsmen, sports officials and prominent figures from Croatia's social and political life.
ZAGREB, 17 Jan (Hina) - The fifth anniversary of the admission of
the Croatian Olympic Committee (HOO) into the international Olympic
community (17 January, 1992) was celebrated in the Croatian
National Theater building in Zagreb on Friday.
The ceremony was attended by numerous sportsmen, sports
officials and prominent figures from Croatia's social and political

HOO President and member of the International Olympic
Committee (IOC), Antun Vrdoljak, welcomed President Tudjman's
representative and Parliament president, Vlatko Pavletic, who was
accompanied by Premier Zlatko Matesa.
Parliament president Vlatko Pavletic, who was the first
minister of culture in the independent Croatia, conveyed President
Tudjman's best wishes for HOO's fifth anniversary.
The HOO commission for improvement of sport and olympic
preparations chose tennis player Iva Majoli as the most successful
sports woman in 1996. Tennis player Goran Ivanisevic was chosen the
most successful sportsman.
The handball team 'Podravka' from Koprivnica was chosen as the
best female team. The Croatian handball team, which won Croatia's
first gold medal at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, was chosen the
best team.
Mirjana Lucic, 15-year-old tennis player and canoeist Tomislav
Hohnjec were chosen as the most promising sportswoman and
sportsman.
Velimir Kljaic, selector of the Croatian handball
representation, was chosen as the best promoter of Croatia in the
world in 1996.
The IOC trophy 'Hundred Years of Olympic Games' was presented
to Croatia's most successful participant in the Olympics and HOO
executive director, Matija Ljubek.
