It was sad that the demonstrators had not gone out on the
streets when Vukovar was being destroyed, when the wounded in
the Vukovar hospital were being shot, when Dubrovnik and
Sarajevo were being destroyed, Mestrovic said in his speech in
the framework of a discussion on the situation in FRY.
"In Sarajevo, I saw 12,000 graves of people who were
killed during bombardments and from snipers," Mestrovic said.
The Parliamentary Assembly should adopt a resolution
condemning authorities in Belgrade for the failure to respect
the results of local elections which took place on 17 November
last year.
Mestrovic expressed support to peaceful demonstrations in
Belgrade as the "basis of democracy".
He stressed that among those demonstrating in the streets
of FRY's capital there was a large number of people who were
in this way expressing dissatisfaction because of the
unsuccessful politics of Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic
in the creation of Greater Serbia, and a large number of
people who were expressing dissatisfaction about the economic
situation.
Supporting the draft resolution which is to be adopted by
the Parliamentary Assembly on Wednesday afternoon, Mestrovic
said that the resolution's deficiency was the fact that
Milosevic had not been clearly stated as the one who had begun
the war in the region of former Yugoslavia.
"The one who started the war cannot be a guarantor for
peace," Mestrovic stressed.
