agreement, making it effective immediately.
A Croatian state delegation was headed by Deputy Premier Jure
Radic, while The Holy See state secretary, cardinal Angelo Sodano,
headed The Vatican delegation.
Sodano said the agreement would serve as the model for similar
future agreements The Holy See would negotiate with other countries
in transition.
Radic said the Croatian government was willing to enable other
religious communities in Croatia to have the same position as the
one currently enjoyed by the Catholic Church.
The Croatian-Holy See economic agreement financially come into
effect on January 1, 1999, when Croatia will earmark US$29 million
from the state budget for the Catholic Church. The money will mainly
cover salaries and the pension insurance of priests. Property
issues will start being resolved as of 2000, to which effect a mixed
state-church commission will be established.
