ZAGREB, June 23 (Hina) - The Education Board of the Croatian
National Parliament's House of Representatives on Tuesday
requested the government to elaborated a proposal for an education
supplement to teachers in order to overcome the crisis in the
Croatian school system.
According to the proposal, made by Ivan Hranjec of the ruling
Croatian Democratic Union, the supplement would burden the budget
with about 200 million kuna by year's end.
Assistant Finance Minister Mijo Jukic said it was "technically
possible" to ensure that sum in the budget revision.
Science and Technology Minister Ivica Kostovic said the government
would agree to increasing the education workers' salaries, but in
next year's budget.
"Those seeking an increase have to say clearly which budget items
should be reduced", Kostovic said, adding there was no basis to
increase salaries with the current budget revision.
"Civilised countries do not increase salaries in the revision", he
stated.
The Education Board will continue the session tomorrow in order for
the government to be able to elaborate the proposal.
