Autor: mses
ZAGREB, Sept 6 (Hina) - The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on Tuesday sentenced the former Chief of the Yugoslav Army General Staff, Momcilo Perisic, to 27 years in prison for war crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.

Perisic was charged with the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, the 42-month-long siege of Sarajevo and a missile attack on Zagreb. This March the prosecution of the Hague-based UN tribunal recommended that he be found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment, while the defence called for an acquittal.

A 13-count indictment charged Perisic with aiding and abetting crimes against civilians in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. Four counts referred to the shelling of Zagreb with an "Orkan" multiple-barrel rocket launcher on 2 and 3 May 1995 when seven civilians were killed and at least 194 wounded.

Perisic turned himself in on 7 March 2005 and was granted provisional release pending trial, which opened on 2 October 2008.
