PRISTINA, Mar 10 (Hina) - Dozens of people were beaten and hurt
during peaceful demonstrations held in Kosovo Monday in protest
against Serbian violence in the southern Yugoslav province.
Among those hurt is a British cameraman, the organisers of the
demonstrations said Tuesday.
According to data of the Kosovo coordinating committee of Albanian
political parties, the Serbian police beat at least 50
demonstrators and wounded 14 Albanian with firearms in Istok, a
town 70 km west of province capital Pristina. Demonstrators were
beaten in Lipljan, Klina and Kamenica too.
In Pristina several persons in civilian clothing severely beat
Chris Wenner, a British reporter of ITN's Channel 4. He is currently
receiving hospital treatment.
According to the Tuesday issue if Koha Ditore, a Pristina daily in
Albanian, one of their reporters from the municipality of Klina,
Maxhun Smajli, was yesterday beaten too.
Peaceful demonstrations against Serbian violence in Kosovo were
yesterday held in several towns. According to estimates of the
organisers, the rally in Pristina was the biggest in the last nine
years since Kosovo was deprived of autonomy and status of federal
member of the former Yugoslavia.
