MOSTAR, 26 Jan (Hina) - NATO commander for Europe, General Wesley
Clark, made an unannounced visit to Mostar on Monday and met the
commander of SFOR's Multinational Division for Sector South-East,
French general Christian Delanghe, and the head of the Regional
Office of the High Representative in Mostar, Martin Garrod.
General Clark also visited SFOR troops in Stolac, south of Mostar.
He told reporters he had arrived to see the activities of SFOR
troops in carrying out the civilian and military parts of the Dayton
peace agreement.
Asked about the arrest of people indicted for war crimes, General
Clark answered that there was "still a great number of war crimes
suspects who had not turned themselves in and who were not brought
in".
"When we meet those people during our activities, they will be
arrested," he said.
Clark declined to comment on speculation on possible arrests of war
crimes suspects in the region of Herzegovina, in the SFOR
Multinational Division's zone of responsibility.
He rejected criticism that French troops in the SFOR contingent
were incapable of arresting war crimes suspects, emphasising that
those troops were able to carry out all tasks.
General Clark also rejected commenting on rumours that Spanish SFOR
troops would be replaced by Americans.
