SARAJEVO, Nov 23 (Hina) - The head of the Organisation for Security
and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina and
the OSCE chairman special envoy for the Southeast Europe, Robert
Barry, believes that many political leaders from the region
represent the remains of the old nomenclature which cooperates
closely with organised crime and the remnants of old intelligence
services.
Spokeswoman for the OSCE mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina Tanya Domi
on Tuesday said that in his report on the situation in Southeast
Europe at the OSCE summit held last week in Istanbul, Ambassador
Barry stressed that those political leaders were trying to maintain
the control over the lives of citizens. Such behaviour represents a
significant danger for the security in the region, he added.
It is a fact that the core of the Southeast Europe is made of
countries headed by political parties, successors of communist
parties, which are now wearing nationalist uniforms, the OSCE
spokeswoman quoted Barry.
The head of the OSCE mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina, recommended
that OSCE member-countries, in an open and firm manner, solve the
existing conflict of interests, namely to remove elected officials
and party representatives from administrations of state and
municipal companies, particularly during and after the
privatisation process.
He also proposed measures which would limit the influence of
political parties on judicial authorities.
The United States diplomat said that politicians of the Southeast
Europe managed to ensure themselves a fortune thanks to connections
with organised crime, while average citizens were still struggling
with great difficulties and were barley making ends meet.
Barry also pointed to the corruption in the region.
