ZAGREB, May 26 (Hina) - The first big world oil well was discovered
by Split-born Antun Lucic, says Ljerka Rakic in an article in the
Croatian oil industry INA's magazine.
Lucic was born in 1855, and graduated from the Polytechnic
Institute in Graz and the Maritime Academy in the northern Adriatic
town of Rijeka. Even though he wanted to become a sailor, Lucic left
his homeland for the United States in 1879.
He installed his first oil rig in 1899 near Beaumont in Texas.
In a short time he managed to advance the oil drilling methods used
at the time, and by using the hydraulic rotating drilling machine
with constant rinsing marked the beginning of a new period in
discovering oil. It was with this type of drilling machine that he
discovered the famous Lucas oil well in January 1901 at Spindle Top.
The daily production of the well amounted to about 15,900 cubic
metres of oil.
On the 40th anniversary of the discovery of the first oil well in
Texas, an 18-metre-tall marble monument was erected at Spidle Top
in Lucic's honour, with an inscription saying a new period in
civilisation began at that oil well.
