NEW YORK, Jan 15 (Hina) - The United Nations Security Council on
Thursday conducted informal consultations on a report the U.N.
Secretary General presented on the situation in the contentious
Prevlaka peninsula, on which the Council should reach an official
decision on Friday.
According to diplomatic sources, the consultations were primarily
conducted among Contact Group member-countries. There is no doubt
the Security Council will adopt the Secretary General's proposal
that the U.N. Mission of Observers in Prevlaka (UNMOP) be extended
for another six months.
The question is how resolute will be the demand to expedite
negotiations between Belgrade and Zagreb on Prevlaka, Croatia's
southernmost tip bordering with the Yugoslav Republic of
Montenegro.
Croatia considers the peninsula a security issue and wants to
resolve it as such, whereas Yugoslavia aspires to some territorial
gains.
In his report, the U.S. Secretary General suggested the possibility
of U.N. mediation in the negotiations, and requested that he be
regularly notified, which motion the Security Council will most
probably accept.
In a letter to the Council last week, Croatia requested the
confirmation of its territorial integrity and its international
borders.
Croatia also requested that the Security Council show willingness
to terminate the UNMOP mandate, to prevent Yugoslavia from using it
to stall an agreement resolution.
The U.N. Security Council resolution on Prevlaka is expected to be
unanimously adopted Friday morning New York time.
