ZAGREB, Dec 6 (Hina) - President Stipe Mesic accepted the
possibility of mediation in the social dispute between the unions
of the public sector and the Government, vice-president of the
Croatian Public Unions' Association, Vilim Ribic, said Wednesday
after talks between the union representatives and President
Mesic.
"Although the President has not voiced his opinion on which side in
the social dispute is right, as he has not reviewed concrete
agreements, be basically supported our basic request to respect
signed agreements and legal regulations," Ribic stressed.
If an agreement with the Government is not reached before the
adoption of the government budget, there will be no social peace in
public services and unions will next year also exert pressure to
increase the price of work, Ribic warned.
Unionists warned Mesic the Government's "dogma on curbing the price
of work" could attract into Croatia only investors motivated by the
low price of labour, instead of having the Croatian society develop
based on knowledge and education.
They hold that the mediation could be organised through a joint
meeting of Prime Minister Racan, President Mesic and union leaders,
if the Government agrees.
