ZAGREB, Nov 16 (Hina) - Six Croatian ecological associations on
Thursday asked the Environmental Protection Ministry and other
responsible ministries to measure radioactivity of waste areas in
front of a factory called 'Ina Vinil' in Kastel Sucurac near the
southern coastal city of Split.
Greens from Split, Zagreb, Osijek, Zadar, Dubrovnik and Istria
asked for the public measuring of radioactivity of the discarded
ash and dross and that citizens and the Green should be called to
attend it.
The societies which held a news conference in a few towns and cities
today simultaneously said that the amount of the stored radioactive
ash and dross was 10,000 cubic metres or some 7.5 tonnes of radio
nuclide U-238 and 55 kilograms of radio nuclide U-235 as well as
certain quantities of radio-nuclide K-40 and Ra- 228.
That industrial waste-dump is covered by a layer of soil and gravel
but data on the quality and thickness of the layer are not known.
The Greens insist on the construction of a cement wall towards the
sea where low radioactive coal from the factory's power plant is
put. They urge for the immediate discontinuation of all works on the
waste dump such as digging or gravelling so that the contamination
of the nearby area could be prevented.
The Greens from the coastal town of Zadar supported this campaign
for Kastel Sucurac and a cleaned bay of Kasteli.
The Zadar Greens pointed to the danger which radio-active waste by
the former alumina plant in Obrovac posed. The waste is left in
pools full of red sludge but for years nobody has taken anything to
improve sanitary conditions of the site.
