ZAGREB, Nov 16 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan on
Thursday received a delegation of the United States National
Democratic Institute for International Affairs, headed by NDI
president Kenneth D. Wollack.
The talks focused on the strengthening of parliamentary democracy
and necessary conditions as a guarantee for political stability in
the country.
The National Democratic Institute is a non-profit organisation
working to strengthen and expand democracy world-wide. Based on the
financial assistance of the United States Agency for International
Development (USAID), the NDI has been active in Croatia since 1994,
and was involved in programmes for the establishment of political
parties and civil election monitoring.
The Croatian government media and pubic relations office said in a
statement the Prime Minister and NDI officials discussed
constitutional amendments which would help the development of
parliamentary democracy in Croatia.
Racan stressed it was important to have stable political conditions
as a good pre-condition for further changes. The talks also focused
on the possibilities of further cooperation in the strengthening of
parliamentary democracy, education of political parties and
strengthening of local government. The two parties exchanged
opinions on the situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina and
democratisation processes in countries in the region.
Wollack expressed satisfaction with the cooperation and stressed
the NDI would continue to work on the development of democracy. The
NDI has recently initiated a parliamentary programme in
cooperation with the Croatian parliament for the promotion of the
work of parliamentary benches and cooperation among them, as well
as relations of the parliamentary benches and the electorate.
