ZAGREB, Oct 18 (Hina) - Amnesty International Croatia on Wednesday started marking the world campaign against torture, which is taking place in 60 other countries, and will last until December 10 next year. The motto of the campaign
is "Do something -- stop the torture: make the world a tortureless zone". The main goal is to exert pressure on those who can put a stop to torture and ratify UN conventions against torture, representatives of the organisation told a news conference. Amnesty International has registered an increase in the number of torturing of people in 150 countries. Such cases are present even in democratic countries. The methods are terrifying, and the victim can be anybody, notwithstanding their sex, age or nationality, Amnesty International Croatia member Natasa Kokic said. ZAGREB, Oct 18 (Hina) - Amnesty International Croatia on Wednesday
started marking the world campaign against torture, which is taking
place in 60 other countries, and will last until December 10 next
year.
The motto of the campaign is "Do something -- stop the torture: make
the world a tortureless zone".
The main goal is to exert pressure on those who can put a stop to
torture and ratify UN conventions against torture, representatives
of the organisation told a news conference.
Amnesty International has registered an increase in the number of
torturing of people in 150 countries. Such cases are present even in
democratic countries. The methods are terrifying, and the victim
can be anybody, notwithstanding their sex, age or nationality,
Amnesty International Croatia member Natasa Kokic said.
The organisation's secretary Edin Tuzlak stressed Croatia was not
on the list of the above mentioned countries, but this does not mean
it was void of such cases.
He criticised the visit of the Chinese parliament speaker Li Peng to
Croatia this June. He holds Li Peng as one of the biggest culprits
for incidents in Beijing's Tienanmen square 11 years ago, and for
the violation of human rights in China.
In talks with Li Peng, Croatian officials ought to have tackled the
issue of the violation of human rights in China, he asserted.
The organisation posed the question to representatives of the
Croatian government in June, but had received no reply, Tuzlak
said.
Amnesty International Croatia will request of the government to
implement the programme for the prevention of torture and abuse of
prisoners, which the organisation adopted this month.
