BELI MANASTIR, Oct 7 (Hina) - The town committee of the Serb Democratic Independent Party (SDSS) in Beli Manastir (eastern Croatia) on Saturday called a news conference in the wake of yesterday's apprehension of 12 Serbs suspected of having committed war crimes in the Baranja area. SDSS president Vojislav Stanimirovic held the reason for their arrest was the difficult political situation in Croatia, which is, "again taken out on Serbs", who are suspected of having committed war crimes in 1995. He expressed surprise that the process was being opened five years later, and involving people who remained in Baranja. Of the 120 suspects, 18 remained in Baranja, others left for Yugoslavia or third countries, some died, Stanimirovic said. He asserted the suspects should not have been arrested, but released on bail. The Osijek-Baranja County police on Friday arrested 12 Serbs accused of war crimes against civilians in the eastern region of Baranja, the county police department reported.
