party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), on Thursday refuted
claims Croatian President Stipe Mesic made earlier today to the
effect that individuals from the HDZ were behind today's
controversial letter by a dozen Croatian generals.
In the open letter, 12 active and retired generals called on the
public to put an end to the criminalisation of Croatia's early 1990s
war of independence from the former Yugoslav federation.
"Without going into the contents of the open letter from the
Croatian generals and war commanders... I completely refute as
untrue the claims made by the President of the Republic Stipe
Mesic," HDZ president Ivo Sanader said.
"It is a degradation of Croatian officers and generals," he
asserted ahead of a party presidency session.
President Mesic had said that individuals from the HDZ who could not
face up to the fact that they had lost January's elections had had
their hands in the letter.
