VUKOVAR, Sept 9 (Hina) - Croatia's Public Works, Reconstruction and
Construction Minister Radimir Cacic visited Vukovar on Saturday,
positively assessing the dynamics whereby family houses in this
town in eastern-most Croatia were being rebuilt.

Speaking about the number of houses intended for rebuilding,
Cacic's assistant Ljudevit Erceg said 850 family houses should be
rebuilt in Vukovar-Srijem County over the course of this and next
year. Reconstruction works have began on half the houses.
The assistant minister said all houses should have roofs by mid-
December this year, and added that if the European Bank granted
Croatia a loan, rebuilding would begin on another 300 houses in the
area.
Minister Cacic today also signed a memorandum with the prefects of
Vukovar-Srijem County and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Petar
Cobankovic and Milivoj Brozina, binding Cacic's ministry to donate
budgetary funds the government will make by selling a "challenger"
aircraft for rebuilding projects in Vukovar.
One of them is the rebuilding of a gym in the Vukovar neighbourhood
of Borovo Naselje, for which Primorje-Gorski Kotar County will
earmark 9.5 million kuna ($1.13 million). The northern Adriatic
county is making the donation as part of an initiative launched by
Croatia's former president Franjo Tudjman whereby each Croatian
county was to reconstruct one building in Vukovar, the town which
suffered the most damage during the Serb aggression earlier last
decade.
Minister Cacic said the reconstruction of the Borovo Naselje gym
required another 4.5 million kuna ($536,000), which will come from
selling the government-owned "challenger" in line with the
government's decision to use the money for reconstruction in
Vukovar.
Speaking about the Tudjman initiative, the reconstruction minister
said it had been unrealistic to seek counties to finance the
reconstruction of Vukovar as one third was receiving subsidies from
the state budget. "It would be much more appropriate if the
reconstruction of Vukovar's principal buildings were financed
directly from the state budget, as it is state money anyway," he
said.
