VINKOVCI, Aug 25 (Hina) - Vukovar-Sirmium County Prefect Petar
Cobankovic in Friday declared this county a disaster area owing to a
long drought.
This decision has been made due to an unparalleled long period
without rains in this eastern part of Croatia.
From April to August only three to 10 litres of rain per square metre
fell in the county and this is below each necessary minimum for the
cultivation of crops. The devastated area covers some 70,000
hectares and damage is assessed to some 200 million kuna (50 million
German marks). Namely, farmers will manage to harvest just 50
percent of field produce.
In addition, yielded crops such as sugar beet and sunflowers will be
of poor quality for the further technological processing.
Vukovar-Sirmium County is the seventh Croatian county to have been
declared a disaster area due to this year's drought.
Of those seven drought-stricken regions, five are in eastern
