session after its month-long summer break on Thursday. Topics to be
discussed at the session include data on the tourist season, a
report on fires in the past 20 days and a proposal that the school
year start a week later.
There are twenty items on the agenda, the first one being
information on the course of the tourist season, which, according
to available incomplete data, is 30 or more percent better than last
year's. The income from this year's tourist season is estimated at
more than US$3.5 billion.
Good tourist results and very high temperatures prompted a number
of counties to ask that the start of the school year be postponed,
and the Education and Sports Ministry forwarded to the government a
proposal that the school year 2000/2001 start on September 11
instead of November 4.
Some topics which had been announced earlier were postponed for the
next session, to be held next week. Among those topics is an
analysis of the ministries' performance and draft measures for
improving it, as well as the operationalisation of the government's
work by the end of this year.
Most government members will participate in tomorrow's expert
discussion, to be held in Plitvicka Jezera between August 24 and 27,
focusing on the fiscal projection of the state budget for the next
three years, the economic strategy, changes to the taxation system
and the basic elements of the social truce.
The discussion was organised by the Finance Ministry. Invitations
for participation were sent to representatives from the Croatian
National Sabor, the President's Office, Croatian National Bank,
Croatian Chamber of Commerce, Croatian Employers' Association, and
the leading workers' unions.
