ZAGREB, June 22 (Hina) - Animated film-maker Jan Svankmajer and his
wife Eva presented their artistic work of many years including
paintings, installations, puppets and equipment for animated films
at an exhibition, which was opened in Zagreb on Thursday.
The exhibition is part of the 14th World Festival of Animated Films,
which this year presented Svankmajer with a life achievement
award.
These unusual exhibits include 'a tactile portrait of Eve' (by
touching it, the visitors can experience how Svankmajer sees his
wife), a 'tactile chair' (made of scrub brushes, tooth and shaving
brushes, scrub boards), and a 'tactile song' (a framed clay
relief).
The film work of this versatile Czech artist has been called
fantastic illusions, like those from dreams, and Svankmajer
himself says animation for him is a "kind of magic because it
breaths life into things, for which people did not always need
technology."
Jan Svankmajer was born in 1934 in Prague, where he attended the
theatre department of the School of Applied Art and the departments
of scenography and puppet directing at the Academy of Dramatic
Art.
Critics believe the fact that he did not study film has helped him
avoid being dependent on the technical principles of film.
Svankmajer still expresses his black humour and irony through
visual arts and poetry.
The exhibition, which will be open until the end of the festival,
June 25, was opened by Czech Ambassador Jiri Kudela.
