ICTY PRESIDENT INSISTS ON EXPEDITIOUS TRIALS

NEW YORK, June 21 (Hina) - The President of the International War Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Claude Jorda, on Tuesday asked UN Security Council member-states to support his proposal about the engagement of external judges so that the Hague-based Tribunal could hold trials in sensible time term. Jorda warned that the Tribunal's credibility could be brought into question, if the processing of war crimes suspects did not proceed faster. In case that the ICTY continues to work at the current tempo, the trials of inductees will last until 2016, he explained. At the moment, the ICTY is employing 14 full-time judges from 14 countries. Together with the Prosecutor's Office staff, there are a total of 1,011 workers from 75 countries. This year's budget is almost 96 million dollars. During six years of its work, the Tribunal has issued 96 indictments. There are 36 indictees in custody in The Hague. To date,

Considering the fact that the prosecution has the right to make the so-called sealed indictments and that some investigations are under way, the ICTY is believed to have over 200 war crimes suspects for processing.
