ZAGREB, June 15 (Hina) - Representatives of Croatia's political
parties, the 'singled out' generals, and the Minister of Homeland
War Soldiers, Ivica Pancic, on Thursday commented on yesterday's
announcement of the names of the Croatian generals who, according
to the findings of the Government Commission for the Revision of
Disability, are fake disabled war veterans.
Some representatives of the ruling six-party coalition and
opposition parties assessed that the establishment of disability
should have been conducted at a slower pace and more meticulously.
Croatian Social Liberal Party's (HSLS) Dorica Nikolic said
announcing the names of fake disabled veterans was premature,
adding one should have waited for all 600 cases to be processed.
Democratic Centre (DC) president Mate Granic said one should
proceed cautiously in assessing disability.
The president of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) bench,
Vladimir Seks, said the manner in which Pancic presented the report
on fake disabled veterans was outrageous. The report gravely
violates human rights and irreparably damages the reputation of
those generals who have been singled out, he said.
Tonci Tadic of the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) said yesterday's
announcement of fake disabled veterans without presented evidence
was a dangerous precedent.
Commenting on statements by the officers who claimed they had been
wrongfully included in the list of fake disabled veterans, Minister
Pancic today said their statements "boil down to their
dissatisfaction with the results of the Commission and its
decisions." This is understandable, because no one is willing to
admit guilt, Pancic said, adding the procedure was clear, it
included an instruction on appeal, which meant that those who were
dissatisfied could appeal against the decision with a court.
Pancic reiterated the list also included persons whose status as
disabled veterans was indisputable, however, the degree of their
disability was questionable.
A day after the Commission's announcement, all generals who have
been singled out said they were wrongfully accused.
