ZAGREB, May 31 (Hina) - Rebel forces in Sierra Leone continue to
surround 235 members of UN peace troops (UNAMSIL) in the east of
Sierra Leone, mostly they are Indian soldiers, a Croatian officer
taking part in the UNAMSIL mission said Tuesday night.
Lieutenant Colonel Goran Cvetnic described the current situation
and position of Croatian soldiers in Sierra Leone in a telephone
conversation with the Croatian Television.
"The situation is significantly better in relation to when we
returned from our vacation in Croatia," Cvetnic said.
The officers left from their vacations in Croatia on May 4, when
rebel forces, under the leadership of Foday Sankoh, had already
captured the first UN members. The rebels released all captured
peace-keepers on Sunday.
Cvetnic added the overall situation, however, in Sierra Leone, was
still complex.
"There are still areas in which incidents are possible and it is
difficult to say or predict what will happen next," he said.
He asserted Croatian officers with the UNAMSIL were performing
their regular tasks professionally.
Ten Croatian Army officers left for Sierra Leone in September 1999
to take part in UN peace-keeping operations.
