CAKOVEC CAKOVEC, May 28 (Hina) - A ceremony commemorating Jewish WWII victims from Croatia's northern Medjimurje region was held at the Jewish cemetery in Cakovec on Sunday. After German troops occupied Hungary, which at the time
included the Medjimurje region, more than 600 Jews from Cakovec and Medjimurje were transported to Auschwitz, where they were killed on May 21 1944. On that day, the Jewish synagogue in Cakovec, built in 1830, was destroyed. We will forever remember the lives and suffering of our compatriots, said Igor Francetic, vice-president of the Zagreb Jewish community. The religious ceremony at the Jewish cemetery was conducted by Rabbi Kotel Dadon. Attending the commemoration were Medjimurje County and Cakovec municipal officials, and representatives of associations and political parties.(hina) rml
