LOWER HOUSE DISCUSSES REDUCTION OF CUSTOMS TARIFFS

Autor: ;LMLI;
ZAGREB, April 19 (Hina) - The Croatian National Parliament House of Representatives Tuesday night discussed a draft on customs tariffs in the first reading. Economy Minister Goranko Fizulic explained the draft represented the first phase of applying customs tariffs agreed during negotiations on accession into the World Trade Organisation. The draft stipulates a reduction in customs by about 28 per cent in average. However, Croatia has been given the longest possible period -- two to five years -- to adjust the economy to the increased competition after Croatia's joining the WTO, and as many as seven years for the most sensitive agricultural and food products, Fizulic said. During the discussion most MPs supported the draft, but some expressed concern about the possible negative influence on the economy, especially agriculture.(hina) lml jn
