ZAGREB, March 8 (Hina) - European Commission commissioner for
foreign affairs Chris Patten will on Thursday visit Croatia and
open a Delegation of the European Commission in Zagreb, while the
secretary-general of the Council of Ministers and high
representative for joint foreign and security policy, Javier
Solana, had to cancel his visit due to responsibilities.
Croatia deems this visit as an important step in the reaching of
institutional relations and entry as full member into the European
Union, which is the strategic goal of the new Croatian government,
and another confirmation of successful negotiations held by Prime
Minister Ivica Racan and Foreign Minister Tonino Picula during
their visit to Brussels, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
In this process we also hold as important the recent visit of the
European Commission's mission for assessment of the situation,
lead by EU political director Fabrizio Barbaso.
We believe that the conclusions of the Mission will have a positive
effect on drafting a study on feasibility and that negotiations on
the agreement on stabilisation and Croatia's accession into the EU
would begin as soon as possible, the statement said.
Croatia especially hails the opening of the European Commission
Delegation in Zagreb because lifting the level of representation
offices would enable a more intense and substantial cooperation
between Croatia and the European Union.
