Gov't proposes changes to make media ownership more transparent

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, July 1 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Friday drew up amendments to the Law on Media and the Law on Electronic Media in a bid to improve the transparency of the ownership structure of media companies.

The changes are not aimed at meddling in editorial policies and they are not pressure on media or journalists, Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said at her cabinet's meeting.

"They are an act of support to the independency of media in Croatia and I believe that all agree that the ownership structure must be clear, transparent and that we must know who are owners of media," she said.

This is also an instrument against any attempt to abuse media and against dirty money arriving in Croatia, she added.

Culture Minister Jasen Mesic said that the proposed amendments precisely specify provisions on the transparency of the ownership structure of media publishers and procedure for providing to the Croatian Chamber of Commerce data on acquisition of interest or shares in media publishing companies.

The draft amendments also envisage fines and measures against those who breach those stipulations.

The proposed changes to the electronic media legislation ban the transfer of broadcasting licences to other legal entities.
