ZAGREB, Feb 2 (Hina) - The United States President's special
adviser for the Balkans and the implementation of the Dayton peace
agreement on Wednesday held talks in Zagreb with representatives of
the Serb National Council (SNV).
According to an SNV statement, Ambassador James Dobbins promised
"full U.S. support in accelerating the refugee return process, and
especially American assistance to the reconstruction of demolished
and damaged houses."
During talks with SNV's Milorad Pupovac, Vojislav Stanimirovic,
Veljko Dzakula, and Jovan Vejnovic, "it was jointly assessed a
major standstill occurred last year in the realisation of the
refugee return programme, and that there had been no steps forward
in property repossession."
It was also assessed "no step forward had been made in the
reconstruction of demolished houses owned by Croatian citizens of
Serb nationality," read the SNV statement.
The former Opposition's victory at recent parliamentary elections
"created conditions for an expansion of the democratisation
process, a gradual coming out of economic difficulties, as well as
active participation in European integration processes," the
statement said.
The SNV believes the latest turn of events has also created
conditions for resolving the Serb community's key issues, its full
reintegration into Croatian society, and its active contribution
to better living for all in Croatia.
Dobbins and SNV's representatives expect the political changes
which have taken place in Croatia will exert a positive influence
and the strengthening of democratic processes and peace on the
territory of the former Yugoslavia.
Dobbins today also held talks with the newly-appointed ministers of
foreign affairs, the interior, justice, and defence.
