Presidential candidate of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) Stipe Mesic gained 41.11 percent, followed by candidate of the coalition of the Croatian Social-Liberal Party (HSLS)/ Social Democratic Party (SDP) Drazen Budisa who gained 27.70 percent of the vote. As not one of them gained the necessary majority of the vote, namely 50 percent plus one of all the ballots cast, Budisa and Mesic will run in a second round of elections, scheduled for February 7.
