NEW YORK, Jan 13 (Hina) - The UN Security Council on Thursday
adopted without a discussion a suggestion of the UN Secretary-
General, Kofi Annan, and extended the mandate of UNMOP, UN monitors
on Croatia's southernmost sliver of land, the Prevlaka peninsula,
bordering with Yugoslavia.
The resolution by which the motion was adopted, has almost no
political content.
Its stance about Croatia's independence, sovereignty and
territorial integrity within its internationally recognised
borders has remained unchanged.
Croatia and Yugoslavia are asked to continue negotiations on "the
settlement of the disputed issue of Prevlaka", in line with the
Agreement on the Normalisation of Relations between Croatia and
Yugoslavia.
Permanent Croatian representative at the UN in New York, Ivan
Simonovic, noted that the Security Council spoke about two border
crossings between the two countries, Debeli Brijeg and Konfin, as a
moves which "continues to represent a significant confidence-
building measure in the normalisation of relations between the two
parties".
Konfin is significant because it defined Croatia's southernmost
border, Simonovic said.
The resolution further called on a continuation of spreading the
freedom of movement of civilians, which Croatia fully advocated and
had again suggested on Monday through Simonovic's letter to
Ambassador Richard Holbrooke.
"I believe that the free use of land and fishing in the entire
Prevlaka area will be possible in the upcoming months," Simonovic
said.
He held the resolution as a step towards the end to the UNMOP mandate
and the establishment of Croatia's complete authority over the
entire Prevlaka region.
