The envelopes were opened and no suspicious powder was found
inside, and the papers were sent to the national public health
institute's laboratory for further tests. The first results of the
analysis can be expected tomorrow, an assistant to the Health
Minister, Ivo Afric, said.
An infectologist, Slavko Schoenwald, said the annual incidence of
cutaneous anthrax in Croatia was one or two cases, whereas the
pulmonary and intestinal form of the infection had not been
registered in the country in the last 35 years.
Croatian health officials have received instructions about their
conduct in case of the break-out of the anthrax infection.
The interior ministry and local sanitary inspection teams have been
asked to intensify control of all facilities which might be
potential targets.
Competent authorities said at the news conference there was no
reason for panic in Croatia.
