Victim support office at Rijeka court presented

Autor: mses
RIJEKA, June 7 (Hina) - More than 100 people have asked the victim and witness support office at the Rijeka County Court for information and help since the establishment of this department five months ago.

Rijeka County Court president Veljko Miskulin said on Tuesday that the office would contribute to the quality of court judgements and proceedings.

Croatian Justice Ministry official Sasa Rajic recalled that the ministry's department for probation and victim support had been established last year as part of a comprehensive judicial reform.

Victim support offices will help courts to conduct proceedings faster and more efficiently, Rajic added.

The offices of this kind try to lessen the victims and witnesses' fear and stress and raise the awareness about witness dignity, he said.

Seven offices of this kind established within courts throughout Croatia have so far offered help and support to 6,000 people.

Their establishment has been backed by the United Nations Development Programme and it has been funded by the Dutch government.

UNDP Permanent Representative in Croatia Louisa Vinton said today in Rijeka that this model of support to victims was internationally recognised.

In attendance at today's presentation of the Rijeka office was also Dutch Ambassador Stella Ronner-Grubacic.

The first four offices were opened within the county courts in Osijek, Vukovar, Zadar and Zagreb in 2008 and 2009.

At the beginning of this year, victim support offices were set up in Rijeka, Split and Sisak.
