SARAJEVO, Sept 4 (Hina) - SFOR commander in Bosnia-Herzegovina,
General Michael Dodson, told reporters in Sarajevo Tuesday he knows
the whereabouts of the most wanted war criminals, including Radovan
Karadzic and Ratko Mladic.
Their arrest had not been possible, however, he said, because they
mostly resided outside of Bosnia's territory. They come and go
quickly, which makes it very hard, he added.
Commenting on the rumours that some of the suspects, like Mladic,
are under the protection of the Serb government and army, General
Dodson said he did not believe that was the case, although it was
possible certain individuals from the Bosnian Serb entity
Republika Srpska helped the suspects.
He announced he will be discussing the matter with the ICTY chief
prosecutor Carla del Ponte at their meeting on Wednesday.
I believe we need a regional approach in order to solve the problem,
meaning, the suspects should not be able to move freely in any of the
countries in the region, he stated.
General Dodson also said he believed Bosnia will one day have to
have a Ministry of Defence on a state level, as well as a joint army,
because that was a prerequisite to strengthening its ties with the
European Union.
The general leaves Bosnia on September 7, and will be replaced as
SFOR commander by another American, General John Sylvester.
