The document was signed by Environmental Protection Minister Branko Bacic, the head of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, Zlatko Ivanis, County Prefect Zlatko Komadina, Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel, and Dusan Sculac, the director of the Ekoplus company in charge of implementing the project.
The project of the waste management centre will be funded with EUR 22.3 million from the European Union, the above-mentioned Croatian fund will earmark EUR 11 million for that purpose, and 16 million euros will be provided by the county, the city of Rijeka and Ekoplus.
The centre will occupy 42.5 hectares in the northern part of the municipality of Viskovo.
The current waste dumps in the county will be closed or upgraded with the beginning of the operation of Mariscina. The centre is likely to be built inn the first quarter of 2014.
Croatia has planned the rehabilitation of 299 landfill sites and has earmarked HRK 1.5 billion to this end. To date, 97 sites have been cleaned up, Kosor said.
