ZAGREB, July 26 (Hina) - Nearly 600 employees of the Sisak
ironworks, who had protested since Thursday morning in front of the

Racan promised that not a single employee would be laid off without
adequate severance pay.
The government decided today to file bankruptcy for this iron plant
with a plan for its re-organisation. Under the plan, 500 of the
current 2,600 workers are likely to be laid off.
A commercial court should soon name a bankruptcy trustee whose task
will be to prepare the factory for privatisation in the coming six
months. The most serious offer for privatisation was given by
"Podbrezova" company from Slovakia.
After meeting Racan, the president of Croatian Association of Trade
Unions (HUS) Zdenko Mucnjak told workers that they would receive a
minimum wage for May and June. A difference between the minimum
salary and the full pay would be reimbursed through legal
procedure.
According to Mucnjak, criminal charges will soon be pressed against
former Ironworks' management that is suspected of wrongdoing while
it led the factory.
Premier Racan will meet the bankruptcy trustee and union
representatives in August to analyse the course of the bankruptcy
procedure, Mucnjak said.
Union leaders who organised today's protest will decide, at the
beginning of the next week, on possible discontinuation of a strike
which has been staged in the plant since 5 July.
