UN URGES ZAGREB, BELGRADE TO RESUME NEGOTIATIONS ON PREVLAKA

NEW YORK, July 10 (Hina) - The United Nations Security Council held informal closed-door consultations on Tuesday on extending the mandate of UN military observes on Prevlaka, Croatia's southern-most tip which borders on the Yugoslav republic of Montenegro. A motion to that effect was put forward by Secretary-General Kofi Annan. According to diplomatic sources in New York, all 15 Security Council members agree UN's 27 military observers should stay in Prevlaka until 15 January 2002. A resolution drafted by Russian diplomats calls on and encourages Croatia and Yugoslavia to resume negotiations aimed at finding a final solution to the Prevlaka issue. The two countries' delegations have not met to discuss the matter since March 1999. It is expected the resolution extending UN monitoring on Prevlaka will be adopted on Wednesday afternoon.(hina) ha
