WASHINGTON, July 7 (Hina) - Eight European countries, including Croatia, and the southern Yugoslav province of Kosovo are covered by a United States programme of assistance in the elimination of landmines, the State Deparment said on
Friday. The programme includes Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Georgia, Croatia, Estonia, and Macedonia. Since 1993, these eight countries and Kosovo have been granted $56.5 million out of almost half a billion for demining programmes worldwide. The State Department said Montenegro and Serbia might be soon included in the programme. Besides financial assistance, the U.S. is helping with the training of demining experts. The U.S. estimates that about 20,000 mines have been destroyed in said eight European countries and Kosovo. It is believed there are about one million only in Croatia.(hina) ha
