KORENICA, July 3 (Hina) - Representatives of an association of
Croats who have settled the town of Korenica in Croatia's region of
Lika and a local branch of a political association called "Society
for Croatia's Identity and Prosperity (HIP), on Tuesday said they
had been shocked by yet another murder of a Croat settler by a Serb
returnee in the village of Gvozd.
They also accused police of failing to do their job in fear of the
OSCE's supervision in cases referring to Serb returnees.
According to a statement the two associations issued today, the
recent murder has not been the first killing perpetrated by Serb
returnees. Therefore they ask the Interior Minister "how many Croat
settlers should be killed until the police begin to take more
decisive actions to find arms hidden by Serb returnees."
They also ask the minister whether somebody is waiting for Croat
settlers to begin conducting raids on their own in the Serb houses
and confiscate weapons.
The two associations maintain the police treat Serb returnees too
kindly because they fear that they may otherwise be accused by the
OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) of
discriminating against Serb returnees.
Therefore, the OSCE is also responsible, as in its reports it is
always emphasising the alleged discrimination against the Serb
returnees, while it makes no mention of and does not express concern
over cases when Serb returnees kill Croats.
There is no mention in OSCE reports about the tragic destiny about
(Bosnian) Croat refugees who have arrived in Croatia and about
their aggravating position, the statement read.
On 30 June, a Serb returnee, Dragan Borota, shot his neighbour Jure
Smilcic dead, firing bullets from a home-made gun, after a quarrel
which followed a long drinking spree in a local cafe. Borota was
immediately taken to County Court in Sisak and detained in
custody.
