Croatian president gives talk at University of Helsinki

Autor: mses
HELSINKI, May 24 (Hina) - The visiting Croatian president Ivo Josipovic held a speech at the University of Helsinki on Tuesday about the European Union membership aspirations of southeastern European countries, war crimes prosecution, cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague and the prospects of that region.

Josipovic said that southeastern Europe logically and geographically belonged to the European continent and that the region's economic, political and cultural integration with the rest of Europe offered the prospect of its development.

Commenting on Croatia's challenges and internal weaknesses, the president spoke about the economic crisis and the poorly conducted process of privatisation and added that the economic recovery would be one of the major tasks in the coming period.

The University of Helsinki has 35,000 students at 11 faculties and 11 research centres. Lectures are given in the Finnish and Swedish languages.

Finland allocates 3.7 percent of Gross Domestic Product for scientific research.
