BELGRADE, June 23 (Hina) - The mutual accusations between
Yugoslavia's military and police officials resumed on Wednesday
when Serbia's Interior Minister Dusan Mihajlovic slammed the
Yugoslav armed forces chief-of-staff, General Nebojsa Pavkovic.
"What is the military leader who defeated NATO afraid of and hiding?
Why does Pavkovic claim he was not familiar with everything that was
happening in Kosovo when it is known that during the state of war the
Interior Ministry was under his command," Mihajlovic inquired at a
press conference in Belgrade.
On Tuesday Pavkovic said the Serb Interior Ministry leaders "are
attempting to collect compromising material about some people from
the Yugoslav Armed Forces." He referred to claims from the Serb
Interior Ministry to the effect that the Yugoslav Armed Forces had
taken part in crimes in Kosovo.
Pavkovic said the Interior Ministry had not been under military
command and that he was not familiar with what certain military
units or the police were doing, or with then Serb Interior Minister
Vlajko Stojiljkovic's orders.
"It is impossible that the commander is not familiar with what was
happening in Kosovo during the state of war," said Mihajlovic. He
read to the press excerpts from orders Pavkovic issued in 1999,
during the state of war. These show he entrusted Interior Ministry
units with some operations in Kosovo.
Mihajlovic also disclosed a conflict between the armed forces and
the police during the late March arrest of former Yugoslav
President Slobodan Milosevic. Charges against military officials
were not pressed at incumbent President Vojislav Kostunica's
asking, he said.
According to Mihajlovic, General Pavkovic now wants to put all the
blame on former Serb Interior Minister Stojiljkovic. He showed
reporters a gold medal with rubies, weighing about 700 grams, which
Pavkovic intended to give Slobodan Milosevic.
