ZAGREB, May 9 (Hina) - The dismissal of the "Slobodna Dalmacija"
daily leadership truly provides a reason for fearing the dominance
of leftist single-mindedness, the Catholic weekly "Glas Koncila"
wrote in its editorial to be issued on Sunday.
The editorial, entitled "What About Balance in the Media?", reads
"If it is a fact, and such is a general opinion, that all other
dailies are certainly against the former ruling party, and in a
greater or lesser degree pro the ruling coalition and in the service
of promoting processes in which there is not much space for
permanent values, ethics or Croatian national interests, then
obstructing this daily which is of different orientation, is a
harmful robbing of Croatia's media space and general and political
pluralism in our society".
The weekly adds that in today's Croatian society it would be
desirable and normal for the media space to be open to the
politically moderate spectre from the rightist to the leftist
sides.
The government, which should be in the service of the general
benefit to all citizens, that is, those politically orientated from
the rightist to the leftist spectre, and which is the majority owner
of Slobodna Dalmacija and the Vjesnik daily, can still amend the
situation threatening plurality by selling the dailies to those who
will be willing to establish a balance in the Croatian media space,
which is truly in the interest of the general good, Glas Koncila
writes.
