ZAGREB, May 3 (Hina) - Candidates on more than 270 party and independent lists will run for councillors at the upcoming local elections in assemblies in 20 counties and the Zagreb City Assembly. #L# The National Electoral Commission has reported most of the electoral lists (29) have been handed for the Zagreb City Assembly, and the least, eight, for the Lika-Senj County assembly. Between nine and 16 lists were handed for other counties' assemblies. Candidates from 25 party and five independent lists will be running for the 51 seats at the Zagreb City Assembly. Parties of the ruling coalition in Zagreb are running independently, while the formerly ruling Croatian Democratic Union will run in conjunction with the Croatian Party of Rights and the Croatian Christian Democratic Union. Running on independent lists are Miroslav Tudjman, the son of the late president Franjo Tudjman, and Ivo Loncar, MP and former television journalists, among others. In many cases party lists are led by affirmed politicians, but in some counties people active in other areas of social life have decided to test their luck. For example, the independent Split- Dalmatia County electoral lists in headed by the, according to many, controversial popular singer Sinisa Vuco. Croatians will visit polling stations on Sunday, May 20. Some estimates say the elections of about eight thousand councillors (in towns, municipalities and counties) will cost the tax-payers some 50 million kuna (about US$6 million). The funds for the local elections have been secured by local unit budgets. Political parties and leaders of independent lists will officially be able to present their programmes as of tomorrow, until midnight May 18. The last regular local elections in Croatia were held in 1997. (hina) lml sb
