called on competent bodies in a statement on Friday to prevent and prosecute all forms of violence in order to prevent Croatia from "becoming a country in which the beating of a citizen on account of a different skin colour, nationality or faith is viewed as acceptable social behaviour." The HHO said competent bodies had dealt weakly and ineffectively with similar criminal instances in the past, despite the fact that the Croatian Penal Code clearly stipulates the prosecution of such acts and that Croatia adopted several international documents on the protection of human rights. The HHO said competent bodies had dealt weakly and ineffectively
with similar criminal instances in the past, despite the fact that
the Croatian Penal Code clearly stipulates the prosecution of such
acts and that Croatia adopted several international documents on
the protection of human rights.
In several recent cases of beatings of the Romany, the State
Prosecutor's Office has been inadmissibly slow in pressing charges
against the perpetrators, and the police utterly ineffective in
arresting them.
