The volume, a joint project of the HAZU and the Zagreb-based
publishing company "Skolska knjiga", was co-financed by the
Croatian Ministry of Culture and the UNESCO Participation
Programme and published with the help of the Croatian Commission
for UNESCO.
The president of the HAZU, academician Ivo Padovan, says this
representative work analyses the entire Croatian history and
culture, national identity and statehood from early days to the
present.
The editor of the second volume, academician Eduard Hercigonja,
says the edition is not a systematic historical survey but a mosaic
of studies which reveal the most important directions of
development processes in Croatia at the time.
The editor of the encyclopedia, academician Ivan Supicic, says the
second volume, just like the entire edition, which consists of five
large volumes, presents arguments supporting the claim that south-
eastern borders of the Western culture are on Croatia's eastern
borders.
The edition, which presents Croatia as a central European and
Mediterranean country, is intended primarily for foreign
researchers and readers.
