ZAGREB, April 25 (Hina) - An invitation to Croatia's ambassador in
Rome to visit the Italian Foreign Ministry in the wake of this
week's suspension of ten Istria County Statute provisions
represents "standard diplomatic practice", according tothe
Croatian Foreign Ministry.
The invitation to Ambassador Drago Kraljevic was made to "exchange
views on topical issues," a source at the ministry told Hina on
Wednesday, declining to comment further.
According to Italy's Ansa news agency, Kraljevic was called on
Tuesday by Italian Foreign Ministry secretary general Umberto
Vattani. He said Italy received the news of the suspension "with
surprise and concern".
The Statute, adopted on April 9, introduced Croatian and Italian as
official languages in six towns and 12 municipalities of the
northern Adriatic peninsula.
According to Vattani, a positive resolution of the bilingualism
issue would incite Italy "to support the prospect of Croatia's
accelerated rapprochement with European structures."
Ambassador Kraljevic had already been called to the Italian Foreign
Ministry, last Friday, after a Croatian patrol boat had shot at an
Italian fishing boat which, according to Croatian authorities, had
been illegally fishing in Croatian territorial waters.
