ZAGREB, April 17 (Hina) - Croatia will soon wrap up the elaboration
of an environmental protection strategy, a key document for the
country's bids to meet European standards in this field.
The strategy is being drawn up by 110 Croatian and foreign experts,
and the entire job has been financed by the World Bank with USD
270,000, an assistant to the Croatian Environmental Protection
Minister, Hrvoje Glavac, said on Tuesday.
According to the document, priority is given to waste management,
sewage treatment plants, the protection of air and nature and
industrial waste management. A dozen billion US dollars should be
ensured for these programmes.
To date, Croatia has invested just 0.2 to 0.3 percent of the Gross
Domestic Product (some 30 to 35 million dollars) annually.
Even if this amount is increased to one percent of the GDP annually,
which is in accordance with practice in developed countries, the
planned amount could hardly be covered with budgetary funds, the
strategy read.
Croatia is one of 27 countries in transition which should adopt such
a document on environmental protection.
